Westlaw Australia Advanced Legal Research Techniques (Webinar) Online

This interactive workshop helps students develop their practical research skills by examining a legal research brief. We will explore methods to analyse the information requirements from a research brief, create effective searches, utilise Boolean terms & connectors, and use the appropriate Search template (Global vs Advanced search). Students will critically analyse and apply the research results to structure and answer the research brief.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and analyse key legal issues, legal principles, governing law and material facts from a research brief.
  • Discuss the approaches available to find relevant content.
  • Evaluate and select the most appropriate Westlaw content types (cases, commentary, legislation, journals, etc.) to perform legal research tasks.
  • Formulate effective search strategies using both natural language and Boolean terms and connectors.
  • Effectively utilise the Global and Advanced search templates in Westlaw Australia.
  • Refine and filter search results.
  • Locate citation reference in Westlaw Australia.
  • Download, print, and email research materials, and review best practices for managing and organising this information for future reference.
